The Social Security Administration posted new rules concerning Social Security eligibility for people with endocrine disorders in June 2011. The following reflects those changes.
Having consistently controlled diabetes without additional complications is probably not enough to enable you to receive Social Security disability benefits for diabetes. However, if your diabetes is not able to be constantly controlled, prevents you from holding a job or is associated with additional debilitating conditions then you increase the likelihood of being approved.
As an example, your diabetes may be controlled with insulin, however due to decreased circulation in the legs you may also be suffering decubitis ulcers on your feet that prevent walking, are quite painful and and may prevent employment. In this case you may have a disability claim.
Your Social Security disability lawyer will probably focus much attention on how the diabetes or pancreatitis is causing additional health problems and how all of the problems combined prevent you from working gainfully.

The endocrine system is a network of glands located throughout the body that secrete hormones into the bloodstream to regulate body functions. Hormonal imbalances can cause a myriad of conditions presenting anywhere from not noticeable to severe incapacitation. The endocrine system includes the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic glands.
In many instances the failure of an endocrine gland to secrete its hormone correctly can result in an illness that affects one or more body systems for which the SSA already has a classification. For example, the SSA indicates that a thyroid problem would be considered under the classification of cardiac disorders if it causes arrhythmias in the heart. If it causes depression, then the problem would be classified under mental disorders.
The endocrine category is one that seems to be a catch-all and may be
of great assistance if you are seeking Social Security disability
benefits.
Diabetes mellitus and its representing conditions is one of the few hormonal imbalances actually covered by the endocrine classification. Some of the conditions diabetes may cause are hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), chronic hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. If these specific conditions are present, then other classifications may be used to substantiate the need for Social Security disability benefits.
To determine eligibility for Social Security disability benefits under the endocrine classification, especially diabetes mellitus, the SSA will review your specific case, the severity of your condition, response to treatments and your ability to gainfully function.
Many endocrine or hormonal problems can be kept in check with medication, however, there are those who have extended complications or especially severe illnesses who may need Social Security disability assistance. As with some other impairments, endocrine problems can be part of multiple medical conditions. Each problem by itself may not be adequate for you to obtain Social Security disability benefits, but a combination of problems may be more than enough for you to receive your Social Security disability payments.
